 About AmeriCorps: AmeriCorps VISTA is one of three main service programs of AmeriCorps that connects full-time members to community organizations and public agencies to create and expand programs that build capacity and ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. Members gain valuable professional, educational, and life experience. The term of service lasts for 1 year. Pre-Service Orientation (PSO) Training is required for all members.

 Position Overview: L.A. Works will be placing passionate, dedicated, highly motivated individuals in nonprofit organizations throughout Los Angeles. They will help transform their host site’s volunteer programs through more effective volunteer recruitment, placement, and engagement practices. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, be a self-starter who can multi-task, and have experience working in nonprofits or with nonprofit volunteers. L.A. Responsibilities Include:

  • Thoroughly assess host site’s volunteer program;
  • Identify new, creative volunteer roles at host site;
  • Conduct targeted recruitment efforts online and offline to improve volunteer matches and increase the number of volunteers placed at host site;
  • Contribute to quarterly and annual grant reporting;
  • Attend monthly meetings and trainings at L.A. Works;
  • Serve as a Project Leader at L.A. Works special days of service;
  • Meet multiple deadlines and benchmarks set by L.A. Works and the AmeriCorps grant

 Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Commitment and understanding of the AmeriCorps principles and values including the one year of service;
  • Ability to adapt to the living allowance and other lifestyle challenges common for AmeriCorps members;
  • A track record of delivering results while juggling competing priorities under intense time pressure;
  • Engaging public speaker and networker
  • Professional demeanor in person, in writing, and on the phone
  • Passion for nonprofit work and belief in the value of community service

 Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license;
  • Must be at least 17 years of age and a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S.;
  • Some evening and weekend commitments;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Duration: One-year commitment


L.A. Works Volunteer Corps VISTA Leader

Position Overview: L.A. Works is seeking a motivated AmeriCorps VISTA Leader to support the Volunteer Corps, a countywide VISTA project based in Los Angeles, CA. AmeriCorps VISTA Leaders are former AmeriCorps VISTA members who have completed at least one term of full time service and have displayed exceptional leadership and passion for community service. With 10 VISTA members, the overall goal of L.A. Works’ Volunteer Corps is to alleviate poverty in Los Angeles by enhancing nonprofit organizations’ volunteer programs. With robust volunteer programs, these organizations will run more effectively and efficiently. The VISTA Leader will act as the go-to person for VISTAs when they need assistance navigating the VISTA Assignment Description, community issues, reporting requirements, and VISTA policies.

 Responsibilities Include:

  • Under direction of the Volunteer Corps Manager, help foster a learning community amongst the VISTA members through planning and leading monthly trainings, meetings, and activities;
  • Assist VISTA members in achieving success in performance, service assignments, and for the overall project;
  • Maintain regular communication with VISTA members to recognize accomplishments and to provide support, motivation, and feedback;
  • Develop training resources to enhance professional development opportunities for VISTA members;

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Must have successfully completed one term as an AmeriCorps VISTA member prior to starting the position;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Engaging public speaker and networker;
  • Must be willing to learn, work hard, and teach others;
  • Passion for nonprofit work and belief in community service

  • Some evening and weekend commitments;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Duration: One-year commitment
